As far as sainthood goes, I always thought the good person I thought I was would never be good enough, but now I try to see that in a non-judgmental light. This is not an expressway to physical perfection or sainthood. After that many hours, I realized how vast yoga is, how little I knew, and how far I have to travel on this path. It’s not as if I instantly transformed into a yogi or yogini, or a superhero, or even Gumby. We were immersed in the world of yoga.Īfter nine days, I was changed, and not just physically. And we tried many types of yoga classes and studied and worked on all types of poses. We studied anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, of course, and a little bit about the actual business of being a yoga teacher. We also partook in many wonderful lovingly prepared vegetarian meals and learned something about ayurvedic diets. We celebrated with kiirtan and did karma yoga in the garden. We learned all about the chakras and doshas, or energy centers of the body and the body humors of the tridoshic system. We learned about the history of yoga, the philosophies and spiritual belief systems of yoga, the breathing and cleansing techniques, and very importantly, meditation techniques. Here is a good basic introduction in case you are interested.ĭuring those long days we went well beyond the asanas. Yoga unifies the body, mind and spirit, through eight limbs, or paths. But yoga teacher training goes much deeper, into not only the physical aspects of yoga, but the intellectual and spiritual aspects as well. Now, when I say yoga, you’re thinking asanas, or poses, right? That’s what I thought, and my fear was that my body just wouldn’t hold up. It takes an open mind, heart and body, and this happens slowly.

Now, you may wonder how anyone could do yoga (or anything!) for eleven hours, even for one day, and believe me, it took at least four days to acclimate, mentally and physically.

Each module: Yoga, eleven hours a day for nine days, with lunch and bathroom breaks, plus about 30 non-contact hours in between modules.

It is a certification through Yoga Alliance, offered in two nine-day modules. This two hundred hours of yoga teacher training offered by Tai Chi Yoga Center & Holistic Healing Institute is one of the most compressed trainings offered anywhere (there’s one coming up this June!). It was like giving myself a Christmas present!Īfter visiting with family over Christmas and enjoying my first whiffs of freedom from working every day, I took the first module January 7-15 with seven others. My husband was working steadily, so, call me crazy, I took the plunge toward my mid-life career change, and I left my job on Christmas Eve (after giving plenty of responsible notice of course). There was no way I could do it and work - I simply couldn’t take that much time off - my employer had already been so flexible. I didn’t want to wait until next summer or perhaps the winter after that to add yoga to my fitness instructor toolbox.

But I could see a light at the end of that tunnel. After spending the fall working during the week and going to Stott Pilates instructor trainings on many weekends, you’d think I would be ready for a break. In November, it was time to make a decision, and I committed to the winter training, starting in January. But like a seed growing in fertile soil (or like head lice, depending on your perspective), the idea took hold of me and would not let go. If you’ve read my previous post on the subject, the whole idea of yoga teacher training was a little daunting to me, and I was unsure whether I could handle it. I went to the orientation, but I couldn’t fit the training into last summer’s schedule. Just about a year ago now, I explored the idea of taking a yoga teacher certification training offered in Elmira, just about 20 minutes away.
